15 HUGE Moments From Comic Con 2016

15 HUGE Moments From Comic Con 2016

When I sit down to write posts like these, I usually write a few paragraphs to introduce the subject of the article etc…  However, I’m still blown away by the amount of news unveiled at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con.  So before I discuss some of the nerdiest days in the history of nerds, I’ll just say this:

Comic Con happened!

[Honorable Mentions: America Gods Trailer, Legion Trailer, Prison Break Revival Footage]

15. Sherlock Season 4 Trailer

I nearly time for more Sherlock!  If you haven’t had a chance to check out this amazing show starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman you–

Who am I kidding!? Everyone loves this show! Have you seen the trailer for season 4!?

14. Suicide Squad Final Trailer

Suicide Squad is nearly here yet Warner Bros and DC still gave us an action packed final trailer.  I thought the trailers were done after the character focused spots from last week. (Here is Joker’s)  The final spot showcases the music of the film more than anything but there is awesome new footage including a few previously unseen plot beats.

13. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

King Arthur isn’t exactly a bankable name in an era overflowing with superhero blockbusters.  Guy Richie isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire with his recent films either. (In my opinion)  However, as a die hard Lock Stock & Snatch fan, I will always line up for Richie’s films.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword looks like a solid movie overall but watching Jude Law perform magic seems a little out of place no?

12. Discover The New Star Trek

Full disclosure…  I didn’t watch a TON of Star Trek growing up…  (Thankfully Nerd Infinite is well represented by our own JB) That doesn’t mean I’m not a fan, I just chose to watch other things.

When J.J Abrams rebooted Star Trek I understood how some hardcore fans were upset.  Especially after Star Trek Into Darkness.  I thought they were entertaining movies but the dedicated Trekkers out there wanted something closer to the original series they still adore.

I get it.  Hopefully CBS does as well with Star Trek Discovery set to debut in early 2017.  Check out the first trailer below:

11. Fantastic Beasts

When Harry Potter finally defeated Voldemort on the big screen, I thought we were done with the Wizarding world.  The Harry Potter series went out on a high note and left fans wondering if we would ever hear the word muggle again.

I’m the first to admit, when WB announced Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, two different words crossed my mind: Cash Grab.  Judging by these trailers, it would appear there is a worthwhile story to tell sooooooo…  I was wrong?  Perhaps Harry Potter was only the beginning…  We shall see.

10. King Kong Is Back

Is it just me or is that a giant King Kong!? He’s huge!  The first trailer for Kong: Skull Island looks fantastic but I’m already looking ahead to the future when this Kong takes on Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla.

9. Marvel/Netflix Unleashed!

When Marvel & Netflix partnered for a series of shows that would all connect I thought it would be amazing…  And that’s EXACTLY how that SHIT went down!

Daredevil Season 1 set an entirely different tone for the MCU and established the ground level of Marvel Heroes.  Jessica Jones followed up with an amazing run in it’s first season.  Daredevil Season 2 gave us The Punisher!  At Comic Con this year, it was a safe bet that we would get a trailer for Luke Cage.  I certainly didn’t expect to see Iron Fist and The Defenders as well!

8. Ghost Rider On TV!

The second Marvel got the back the rights to Ghost Rider, people thought the character was perfect for Netflix myself included.  However, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD just completed its best season yet and vengeance is coming!  Ghost Rider’s appearance on SHIELD just made the show’s fourth season an EVENT!

I can’t wait to see Coulson’s reaction the first time he sees Ghost Rider’s fiery chains.

7. Wonder Woman Trailer

Wonder Woman stole the show in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Now we go way back for an entire film of Wonder Woman kicking ass!  The action in this trailer looks amazing.  Time will tell how the story fits in with the rest of the DCEU.

6. Brie Larson Is Captain Marvel

Rumors broke weeks ago about Brie Larson’s potential involvement in Captain Marvel.  Had this news been a surprise she would have ranked higher on this list.  Nonetheless we finally have confirmation that Larson will be the first heroine in the MCU to get her own movie!

5. The Blair Witch Returns

Suprise! Adam Wingard’s (The Guest, You’re Next) new film is a sequel to The Blair Witch Project!  A real sequel…  Not that garbage they spewed at us in 2000.  Reviews have already surfaced and this film looks like a worthy follow up to the found footage classic!

4. Marvel Phase 3 Updates

Marvel’s panel in Hall H this year was massive!  Big enough to merit it’s own top 15 list.  I broke out the three biggest reveals (Captain Marvel casting, Guardians 2 and Doctor Strange’s trailer) but there was so much more!

They revealed a completely rebranded animated logo for Marvel Studios.  We also got new logos for their upcoming projects:

Marvel also unveiled the complete cast of Black Panther including who the cast will play.  Highlights include Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, the main villain of the story.  Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia. And finally Walking Dead alum, Danai Gurira, will be playing Okoye.

The audience in Hall H were also treated to the first footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming.  Marvel also confirmed Vulture as the main villain presumably(?) played by Michael Keaton.  The footage wasn’t released online but we did get some concept art:

When the focus shifted to Doctor Strange, we got an incredible new trailer! (More on that below)

Next, Marvel revealed more details about Thor: Ragnarok (weird new logo no?) including the announcement that the fire demon Surtur will make an appearance.  We also got a look at Hulk’s gladiator armor!

As mentioned above, they officially announced Oscar Winner Brie Larrson (Room) as Captain Marvel.

Finally (these are slightly out of order) Guardians of the Galaxy took over Hall H with costumed Ravagers invading the room.  They showed footage and once again those of us not in attendance were left out.  Regardless, Director James Gunn was there.  The cast was there and..  Kurt Russell was there!

3. Star Lord’s Dad Revealed

I sincerely believed Marvel and James Gunn would hold onto the secret of Peter Quill’s parentage until the day Guardians 2 is released.  They surprised us all twice.  First they announced Kurt Russell will be playing Ego The Living Planet.  Then they dropped the bomb that he’s also Star Lord’s father!

Boom.  Mic drop.

It’s a LIVING PLANET!  Dammit I wish they let us see the footage!

2. Doctor Strange Trailer 2

Let’s get the obvious out of the way…  Doctor Strange looks amazing!  I suppose that just about covers it…

I don’t even know what’s happening in this trailer but it’s visually stunning and features an incredible cast.  I think this movie will do for magic what Guardians of the Galaxy did for the cosmic side of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

1. Justice League Trailer!

Show of hands.  Who saw this coming?  I figured AT BEST we would get some concept art and maybe a Hall H only clip.  Instead the entire world got to see the teaser trailer for Justice League!

Now…  I’m not a giant fan of this trailer but I am looking forward to the film.  And you have to applaud WB and DC for putting this out there.  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was largely criticized for it’s darker themes and lack of humor.

This clip is the first step to changing the image of DC’s Extended Universe.
