Avengers Infinity War & Marvel’s Greatest Year

Avengers Infinity War & Marvel’s Greatest Year

Marvel recently released a trailer announcing the official start of principal photography for Avengers Infinity War.  I couldn’t be more excited to see Thanos fully unleashed on all of Marvel’s heroes.  The entire roster of heroes will be on hand to rid the universe of The Mad Titan.  If that wasn’t enough, the entire film will be shot in IMAX format.  The first major Hollywood film in history to do so.

The trailer reveals a few pieces of Thanos concept art in addition to (finally) confirming The Guardians of the Galaxy will join in the action.

But that’s not what I was thinking about when the trailer ended.  I was thinking about the incredible slate of films Marvel will release in one calendar year.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017
Black Panther – February 16, 2018
Avengers: Infinity War – May 4, 2018

Five epic movies in 366 days!?  At this very moment, the Marvel machine has never worked harder.  The ideas have never been more ambitious and groundbreaking.  It truly is an amazing time to be a fan of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

In 12 months we’ll see the return of The Guardians of the Galaxy.  A movie that already promises to be another mega hit.  Director James Gunn has repeatedly stated that Thanos is not in the film.  GotG Vol 2 will tell a stand alone tale about an evolving family.  I believe him but that doesn’t mean the Infinity War story line won’t move forward.  Perhaps the post credit sequence will show us WHY the Guardians will head to Earth to defend it from Thanos?  Will the final Infinity Stone appear?

A few months later, Peter Parker/Spider-Man will officially take his place alongside MCU royalty.  Will this be the Spider-Man movie.  It’s hard to believe we’ll soon see Spider-Man fight alongside the rest of Marvel’s stable of heroes when Thanos attacks.

Thor: Ragnarok may become the most important film in Phase Three.  At least when it comes to setting up the cosmic elements of Infinity War.  Thor & Hulk are off in the cosmos fighting to save Asgard from annihilation.  The film already boasts the return of Loki and the debut of Cate Blanchette’s Hela.  I think Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones will be a big factor in the plot.  Personally, I think it’s a guarantee we will see Thanos fight ‘something’ in Thor: Ragnarok.  I’ll also guarantee the post credit sequence for this movie will give us an epic reveal.  Thanos acquires all the stones?  Thanos finally heads to Earth?  The debut of Adam Warlock?  Captain Marvel?

Black Panther has the potential to be a full blown sequel to Captain America: Civil War AND an epic stand alone adventure..  It’s our last chance to catch up with the Avengers on Earth before Thanos attacks.  There’s no official word on casting but I think we’ll see cameos from Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes.  Marvel needs to position as many pieces as possible to avoid a mess of exposition when the Infinity War begins.

Two months later…  It’s go time.  Thanos vs the entire MCU.

That’s one hell of an action packed 12 months Disney…  The big question is, will they ever produce a better 12 month stretch?  Phase Four is a long way off but is it possible?  I can’t see how they’ll ever top this.  It would be amazing but come on!?

(Side note: It’s crazy to think that right in the middle, Disney still has Star Wars: The Last Jedi to unleash!)
