Happy! Coming To An Imagination Near You!

Happy! Coming To An Imagination Near You!

Based on the New York Times best-selling graphic novel of the same name, Happy! follows Nick Sax – an intoxicated, corrupt ex-cop turned hit man – who is adrift in a world of casual murder, soulless sex, and betrayal. After a hit gone wrong, his inebriated life is forever changed by a tiny, relentlessly positive, imaginary blue-winged horse named Happy.

As you may have already guessed, this is NOT your average drama. This adult crime/comedy is a fast-paced, entertaining story with snappy dialogue and a colorful visual style. There are moments of compassion sprinkled throughout, but the pace is quick to get back up to speed and keep you on your toes shortly thereafter. Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) does a great job as the lead, andĀ Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens) is the perfect choice as the voice for Happy.

Due to Nick’s disappointing lifestyle, it’s easy to see the appeal of pairing him up with Happy – a character who knows only the wishes of a child and is full of innocence and wonder. Through excellent writing you can already see the chemistry between Sax and Happy starting to form, and it will be sure to grow in future episodes. It also helps that only Sax can actually SEE Happy, whereas everyone else thinks Nick is starting to go off the deep end and is talking to himself. The action sequences are also very engaging, with quick cuts and plenty of creative thinking on Sax’s part. Unique camera angles and excellent direction will keep your attention as you won’t want to turn away for fear of missing anything.

Happy! has the building blocks to be a very successful show. Packed with action and humor, it does a great job of engaging the viewer and once you get a taste of the Sax/Happy relationship, you’re going to want more. It will be fun to see where this will go from here.

Happy! premiered Thursday, December 7th at 10pm ET on Showcase.
