I Don’t Know Anything About The Dark Tower… And That’s Awesome!
Right now, a big chunk of Hollywood movies are sequels, reboots, prequels or projects based on existing properties. The cinematic ‘surprise’ has been replaced by the curiosity surrounding one question: Can they pull off the [insert movie title] adaptation?
The Dark Tower is extremely interesting to me because it’s a complete mystery. I don’t know the story. I don’t know the characters. I’ve never read the books. Since the Nikolaj Arcel helmed feature was announced, I’ve purposely avoided any and all news stories aside from casting etc..
I know NOTHING about The Dark Tower. Until this trailer was released.
You might argue that I should have avoided the trailer too. Unfortunately, I just don’t have that kind of will power. So this is my official first take on the film and, by association, the book.
I like it but Matthew McConaughey’s villain just doesn’t seem that scary. For a character built up to be worse than the devil, I’m not sensing the evil. He must do some pretty awful things in the film to merit that moniker.
As a trailer, The Dark Tower is set up to be a nice change of pace in the always crowded summer movie season. I’m curious to read hardcore fan reactions to the trailer/film but I have to return to radio silence and avoid spoilers. To quote Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained:
“You had my curiosity Dark Tower… Now you have my attention…”
