Star Trek: Discovery – First Take

My very first thought upon seeing the teaser trailer: this new ship looks almost EXACTLY like the Enterprise concept art created by Ralph McQuarrie back in the 70’s. There were a few different ideas of how to bring back Star Trek before we ultimately got “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in 1979, and that design for the ship was part of it.

So taking that into account, my initial thought is that this series might be set after TOS but before TNG? Which I guess could be an interesting time to set it, there was a significant gap there we have yet to explore. However, as with the prequel show “Enterprise”, will the audience be forced to ignore real-life progressions in technology and television making? Will we be forced to accept what will most likely be a much more updated look to The Next Generation but still pretend it took place BEFORE that series?

Lastly, the music. The “Star Trek” theme is one of the most recognizable themes out there. The music in this teaser felt like they were trying too hard to make something great – and at one point sounds like the start to the “X-Files” theme.

My excitement level for “Star Trek: Discovery”?

Still pretty low.
