The First Trailer For Tom Hardy’s VENOM Is Here & It’s Missing Something
Let’s face it. We all want Venom vs Carnage. We want confirmation that this epic battle will happen on the big screen. But we don’t need to see it in a teaser trailer.
We want to see Eddie Brock’s vicious transformation into Venom. We want to see the rage and all the eye candy the film will deliver. But we don’t need to see it in a teaser trailer.
We want to know where the symbiote comes from. How it will connect to the MCU Spider-Man given all the complicated licensing challenges between Marvel and Sony. But we don’t need to see it in a teaser trailer.
We do need to see something! A glimpse? Something to light the fires of inescapable hype. A tiny peak. A close up of teeth? A shadowy figure leaping off a building? The eyes?
If the title wasn’t Venom you would really have no idea what the film is about. (Other than becoming someone you’re not.) From a casual fans perspective this doesn’t even really look like a comic book movie. Maybe that’s the point. I refreshed web pages this morning until the trailer was released because I KNOW what this movie is. I know what it has the potential to become.
Overall, it was a let down. I’m not asking for much but it is a teaser trailer. I thought we would at least get a look at the eyes. Maybe the design isn’t locked down yet? Maybe it still needs work?
These are not the questions I wanted to be asking after a teaser trailer. There’s a balance between showing too much and showing nothing at all. Usually, movie studios making the mistake of showing too much. I suppose I can give Sony credit for showing restraint but this felt… Different.
