Top 10 Moments: Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith
Wrapping up my countdown of the best Star Wars prequel trilogy moments was fun for two reasons. First, it’s by far the best of the prequels so finding worthwhile moments was easier. Second, it’s finally time to move on to the original series!
You’ll find links to all Star Wars countdowns below!
10. This Is How Liberty Dies
There has to be a few people in that chamber thinking… “Did we just f*&k up and hand over too much power to this wrinkly guy?”
The prequels are very heavy on political themes but this moment provides a satisfying resolution to the Palpatine’s strategic maneuvring.
9. Unlimited Power
Even though it took three films to set up Anakin’s fall to the dark side, this moment still felt a bit rushed. It’s still an important moment where Palpatine finally reveals the Sith Lord within and unleashes his full power.
8. The Death Star
That’s no moon… You get the idea. It’s a fantastic shot.
7. Obi Wan vs Grievous
He may be a throwaway villain but he certainly looks cool AND he fights with four lightsabers at once. That’s more than enough to be included on this list.
6. Darth Plagueis The Wise
Darth Maul was wasted. Count Dooku (in my opinion) sucked and SHOULD have been Maul all along. Emperor Sidious and Darth Vader are obviously crucial to the saga. What about other villains?
I’ve always been fascinated by the tragedy of Darth Plagueis. It’s an important scene that establishes Palpatine’s knowledge of the dark side and deepens the mythology of the Sith. Doesn’t Plagueis kind of look like the zombies from I Am Legend?
5. Yoda vs Sidious
They didn’t quite master Yoda’s fighting techniques in Episode II. Having said that, his battle with Palpatine AKA Sidious is pretty fantastic. As powerful as the Emperor is, Yoda almost had him. Almost.
4. The Opening Battle
I suppose I should be more specific. The real moment here is the opening shot of the battle orbiting Coruscant. It’s fully CG shot lasting well over a minute that features an enormous amount of detail.
It’s easily some of the best space action in the entire series including the original trilogy.
3. Obi Wan vs Anakin
This battle always had to be epic. Thankfully, Obi Wan and Anakin’s battle on Mustafar lived up to expectations.
This was the battle that even the harshest critics of the prequel trilogy enjoyed at least a little. It’s an intense battle that includes the horrific injuries that truly transform Anakin into Vader once and for all.
2. Execute Order 66
It’s one of the most infamous moments in the entire Star Wars story. We first heard of the great Jedi purge when Obi Wan first tells Luke about Vader’s quest to kill the Jedi. In Episode III, we finally get a glimpse at the purge when Sidious issues Order 66.
The result is an incredibly dark sequence that includes the death of multiple Jedi. Even worse, it features Anakin destroying younglings. His first true act as a Sith Lord.
The moment we hear Vader’s ominous breath for the first time still sends chills down my spine. I loved the POV shot of the mask lowering and clasping shut. I love everything this moment means to the entire mythology of Star Wars.
However, that’s where the moment ends. We all know what happened next. (Noooooooooo!)
